﻿Hi, I'm really looking forward to our lesson today. I hope you are too. Before we get started, this is just a little reminder. We're here to support any approaches you might already be using. And any work, you might have already been set. We know that this lesson, is going to be going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure about anything or have any questions, then please do contact your usual therapy team. Hi, today let's look at all the steps involved in washing our hair, and how we can do it so that we can be as independent as possible. Being able to wash your own hair is really important. Some of the skills that you need to be able to wash your own hair, include having good balance, and good postural controls so that you can hold yourself nice and still in upright. Having really good shoulder strength 'cause your arms need to go up, up, up up... And lift your hands onto your head. You need really good fine motor skills, 'cause thinking you need to open the shampoo, you need to rub it into your hair, you need quite a good sense of touch, and you need to really pay attention to what you're doing. Pause the video now, to get the items you will need. Some paper, a pen or pencil, scissors, glue, and also the worksheets. Restart once you're done. When you going to have a shower to wash your hair, these are the steps. So, you would place the towel close to the shower door, you'd get undressed, turn the shower on to a comfortable temperature, step into the shower, and then make sure the shower door is closed behind you. Otherwise, you're going to have a very wet floor. Next, you want to wet your hair under the shower. Then, you're going to take the shampoo and put it on the front and the back of your hair. Quite often, we forget the back of our head, but actually it also needs to be washed. Okay? And then you could close your eyes so you don't get any soap in your eyes. Rub the shampoo until it foams and makes lots of nice big bubbles. And... When you think your hair is clean, then you can rinse the shampoo off your hair. Now it's very important that you check you've got all the foam off and you can do this by rubbing your hair with your fingertips and then checking to see if there's any foam left. Okay? You're then, if you use conditioning, you're going to add the conditioner, rub it in, rinse it off, and then you're going to squeeze out the excess water from your hair. You're then going to turn off the tap and get out of the shower. Pause the video and go to the worksheet. Okay? I want you to print off the worksheet, cut out the steps and stick them in order from number one all the way to number 18. If you don't have a printer, then just write the steps in the correct order on a plain piece of paper. Resume once you're finished. Remember, take your time to get all the items you need. Practise, practise, practise. Enjoy your hair wash. It should be a nice relaxing activity. Now, some ways that we can make this easier, if you struggle to rub the shampoo and well maybe your hands aren't too strong, what you could do is, you could ask an adult to help you dilute the shampoo in the bottle with some water, okay? And that just means it's a lot easier for you to rub it in and to get that nice foam coming up. You can also use a handheld shower, the attachment. If you find standing under the shower too overwhelming, and then you can use that to rinse your hair or wet your hair. If you're struggling with your balance, you can use a shower seat or a handrail if you're finding it really tricky. Use an anti-slip shower mat to prevent you from slipping in the shower. And if you find that your hair is super thick and it's really hard for you to dry your hair with a towel, then you could use a towel cap.
