Video: How do I plant a bean?

﻿Hi everyone. I'm Miss Harris. How are you doing today? Good. I'm glad to hear it. Should we start today's lesson off with a virtual high five. Ready? Three, two, one go. Good job. Now, today it's really exciting. It's our first lesson of our plants unit. And as you can see, I've got some beautiful flowers behind me and every lesson I'm going to be asking you to identify what flower is, or plant is behind me. So don't worry if you don't know, because I'm going to tell you at the end anyway, but it would be really great if you could have a guess, because maybe you already know what this flower is. Today, we're going to be answering this question, how do I plant a bean? Now we're going to be planting some kidney beans today. So don't worry if you don't have those things because you can join in with me in the lesson, okay? So we are going to be looking at what is the seed? Looking at different types of seeds, looking at what a plant needs to be healthy, looking at the method of plantings, the instructions of how to plant our kidney bean, and lastly, we're going to plant our beans. For today's lesson, you will need an exercise book or a piece of paper, a pencil, a coloured pencil and most importantly, your brain. If you need to go and get any of these things, you can pause the video and go and get those now. Well done. Now for the experiment today, you will need a pot or a container, some soil, some kidney beans, and some stones. Now, if you don't have these things, you can still take part in the lesson and watch me plant my bean because each week we're going to be looking at how the bean plant changes and we're going to be using it in our very last lesson. So again, don't worry if you don't have these things, because you can take pots in the experiment with me. So if you would like to get these things ready, you can go and get them now. So you can pause the video. Well done. So we are going to be scientists in this unit of work. Do you know what a scientist is? So a scientist is a person who studies the world around us, including things living and nonliving. So what is a living thing? So we are living things and plants are also living things whereas my pencil, it's not a living thing, is it? It's not breathing. It's not, it can't eat, it can't sleep, it can't reproduce or produce waste. So it's not a living thing. Whereas plants and us, we are living things. So we are going to study plants in this unit of work. Okay. Let's do our star words. So these are the important words we're going to be using in this lesson. So we're going to do something my time, then your turn. So I'm going to say it, then you're going to say it. You ready? So let's do, I'll say the first part, ready? Star word, star words, star words. Your turn. Good. Sunlight, soil leaves, bean, seed, stem, roots, water. Great job. Well done. Okay, so we are going to start by looking at some types of seeds. So do you know the name of any of these flowers? So I want you to look carefully at these plants, how are they made? Do you know? So they were made by planting a seed. And there are lots of different types of seed. And each plant has a different type of seed. So the plant in my background is going to be different, the seed is going to be different, a different shape, a different size, a different colour to the seeds that these plants that you can see here will produce. So, here are some examples of some seeds. So we've got a sunflower here. And you can see that the seeds are really big, they are black and white, and they're a kind of a shape like this. And the sunflower produces lots of sunflower seeds they are grown in the middle part of the flower. Then in the middle, we've got the red poppy, which is a wild flower. And it produces a teeny tiny little black seeds. You might have seen them before. And lastly, we've got a pear. So some fruits have their seeds inside of them. So we can see here that the pear, when you eat a pear and you get to the core of the fruit, you can see that there are some seeds in there. And the seed of a pear is like a brown colour. So there are different types of seeds. And here, we can see lots more grains and some beans. Today we're going to be planting some beans and watching them grow. And we will be using this plant to influence our learning over the next couple of weeks. I'd like you to take 10 seconds by pausing the video, and I would like you to look at these seeds and I'd like you to choose two and compare their shape. So I might choose these ones down here. The seeds are small, thin and they are black and white. Whereas these seeds are still thin, but they are a brown colour. So can you see that, that I have compared two types of seeds? Can you pause the video now and compare to seeds, so choose two different ones. Well done. So now we're going to look at what a plant needs to be healthy. So for each plant to grow, they will need some things so they can grow to a big healthy plant and live for a longer time. So we're going to go through each of their needs now. So the first one is, plants need lots of sunlight. Just like us, they need lots of vitamins from the sun to be able to grow. They need lots of water so that they don't get thirsty. So it's important that we water our plants regularly. So they don't get thirsty because just like us, they need water to survive. Then plants needs something called carbon dioxide. Now carbon dioxide is a gas that's in the air and we can't see it because it's a gas, and we can't often see gases. So in a moment, I'm going to ask you to draw what a carbon dioxide. But you could see here, down here, pointed the wrong way, you can see down here that I've used these waves to represent the gas. Now again, they need carbon dioxide to be able to breath healthily and to produce lots of things inside the plant to grow. And lastly, plants need lots of warm temperatures to grow. So if they get too cold, they could die and not survive. So we need to make sure that our plants are nice and warm and have lots of sunlight, lots of water, lots of carbon dioxide. Now in your books, I would like you to draw a picture, to show what your plant will need. So here are all of the key words, I keep pointing to the wrong way. Here are all of the key words, can you draw a picture? Pause the video, do that now. Well done. Okay, so now let's take a look at how we are going to plant our kidney bean. So our method is another word for the instructions, but it's a special word that scientists use, should we say it method. Your turn. Good. So let's look at the first one. So here I've got three steps that we're going to follow first. So I would like you to fill in the gap to describe the method of planting a bean. So first we're going to put some stones at the bottom of our pot to keep the water so it doesn't sit at the bottom of the soil because too much water can be quite unhealthy for our plant. Then number two, we're going to fill up our pot with soil. So we're going to put soil on top of this stones. And lastly, we're going to put our seed on top of the soil. So those are our first three steps. Now let's see if you were listening really carefully. I would like you to write these three steps first and fill in the gaps, using the words at the bottom. Pause the video and do that now. Well done. Now, here are the next steps. So we've got four and five now. These are the last steps. So number four, gently cover, sorry, cover seeds gently with the rest of the soil. And lastly number five, gently water your bean. So we're going to put a little bit of water on the rest. So now it's time to pause the video and fill in the gaps with these two sentences. Great job. Now, can you pick up your coloured pen or pencil because we are going to tick or fix. If we take it, that means we got to right, if we need to fix it, don't worry, we're going to write the correct answer. So number one, put some stones at the bottom of your pot. Give yourself a tick if you wrote pot. Now, if you didn't get it right, don't worry, we're going to fix it in a moment. So just keep listening. Number two, fill up most of your pot with soil. Give yourself a tick if you wrote soil. Number three, put your seed on top of the soil. Give us over tick if you wrote seed. Number four, cover your seed gently with the rest of the soil, Give a ticket if you wrote soil. And lastly, gently water your bean. Now, if you've got any of these incorrect, don't worry because now the chance to fix it. You can put a nice, neat line through it and write it just above there, incorrect word. So pause the video and fix any of your words now. So now we have written our method to plant our bean. Do you think it might be time to plant our bean now? Yes, definitely. So to plant our bean, you will need a pot, some soil, a kidney bean, and you will need some stones to put in the bottom. So make sure that you are following the instructions that we've just written if you would like to take part in the lesson. Now, remember if you don't have these things, don't worry, you can still take pump by watching me do the experiment in a moment. And if you don't have a pot or soil, you can put your kidney bean on top of the dump cloth or a paper towel, and just make sure that the paper towel is wet everyday so that it will grow. So now it's time to begin your experiment. Otherwise, keep watching to watch me do the experiment. So we are going to begin by planting our kidney beans. So I've got everything I need. I've got my pot, I got my soil, I have got my stones, some kidney beans, and then I've got a little shovel here to help me plant it. So first following the steps, I'm going to use my pot. I'm going to put some stones at the bottom to help drain the water out when I water it. Some of the bottom there just to cover the bottom like so. So we don't need all of them. Then I'm going to put some soil into my pot. I'm going to sprinkle some in. It's okay if you get a little bit of a mess, I put a tray down. So I'm not going to fill it all the way to the top because I'm going to put my bean contents, my bean in first. There we go. Lots of stuff up. There we go. So, now I'm going to put one bean in the middle like that and then put some more soil just a little bit over the top of it. Use a little bit more. Make sure it's nice and covered like soap. And then we are going to water it. So now we're going to add some water, I've got a little spray water bottle. a little bit of water on the top, and then putting it in some sunlight, maybe on a windowsill in your kitchen, or you can put it in the garden and it will grow over time.
