Video: Location and importance of Liverpool

﻿Hello, I'm Miss Goacher. This unit of work is going to cover urban change within the UK. And our focus for today is to look at the location and importance of Liverpool, which is our chosen urban area. You are going to need a pen, some paper and your brains for today's lesson. So if you need to pause the video at this point, to go and grab those, please feel free. So our first focus of today's lesson is to look at the national location of Liverpool. Remind yourself of what that term, national, means. We are looking at where Liverpool is located within the UK. So first of all, we can see on the map that Liverpool is located in the Northwest of England. It is the fifth largest urban area in the UK and the second largest within the Northwest region. We can see on the map that it is Northeast of Wales, and it is located to the East of Ireland. Make sure that we know exactly what that national location of Liverpool is. We'll then move on to the regional location of Liverpool. So as this regional map shows, and again, remind yourself of that term, regional. So regional means that we are looking at where Liverpool is located within the Northwest. It's located on the banks of the River Mersey and on the coast of the Irish sea. And both of these factors play into the function that Liverpool has as an urban area. We can also see on the regional map that it's located to the West of Manchester, which is the largest urban area in the Northwest. So at this point, what I want you to do is I want you to pause the video, to see whether you can complete the following task. You have three correct statements on the slide that you need to work out which of the three are correct. Read through each of those six statements, and see if you can identify the three statements that are correct. Pause the video at this point to complete this task. So let's see whether you got those statements correct. You can see on this slide, that the three statements are correct. Our statement two, that Liverpool is located to the Northeast of Wales. Statement three, that Liverpool is located on the banks of the River Mersey, and statement five, that Liverpool is located to the West of Manchester. Make sure that you've got those statements correct, and that you haven't accidentally picked statement one, four, or six, which all have errors in them. So our first job today is to look at the importance of Liverpool. And we to look at two particular types of importance, international importance and national importance. Now international importance refers to the global role that Liverpool has, so we are thinking worldwide. And national importance refers to the importance that Liverpool has within the UK or within the British Isles. You can see from the two images on the screen that they give us some clues about the importance that Liverpool has. So have a look at those images and see if you can work out any ideas about what might make Liverpool important, either worldwide, so internationally or within the UK and British Isles, so nationally. At this point in the lesson, I want you to see whether you can work out exactly how Liverpool is important internationally and nationally. You have six statements on the slide. Each one of those is either an international importance or a national importance. All that you need to do is find out and work out, which of those statements links to either category. You might write these statements out and use some colour. You might put them into a table. See if you can identify which ones are evidence for international importance and which ones are evidence for national importance. For example, I might look at statement one and read that UNESCO world heritage site status, which protects much of the Liverpool docks. And I might think "right, world heritage, "that links to international importance." See if you can work out where the next five statements fit. So let's check what we've got. You should have three statements that you've identified as Liverpool's international importance and three statements that you've identified as Liverpool's national importance. Our international importance for Liverpool comes from the UNESCO world heritage site status, which much of the docks in Liverpool are protective by. The fact that Liverpool has key global music venues, such as the Echo Arena and the Cavern Club. And that Liverpool was granted the status of the European Capital of Culture in 2008. Nationally, Liverpool is important due to the role that the ports have played in the growth of the British Empire. The fact that industries in Liverpool generate £3.2 billion for the UK economy, and that Liverpool and Everton football clubs are located within the city, which are incredibly important nationally for football fans. Check that you've got these correct. Correct anything you need to, if you need to pause the video, please do, before we move on. Our next job is to see what we have learnt so far. So another opportunity for you to pause the video and to see what you can remember. There are four statements on the slide, but only two of them are true. Your job is to work out, which of these two statements are accurate. Pause the video, have a go, and we'll go through the answers in a second. So let's see if we got those statements correct. Remember we were looking for two correct statements on the slides out of the four. The two that we should have picked out as being correct are option two, which was that Liverpool was the 2008 European City of Culture. And option three, which was Liverpool is a UNESCO world heritage site. The two other options are incorrect, so option one, the Canyon club doesn't exist, it's the Cavern Club, and option four, Liverpool isn't home to West Brom, it's home to Everton and Liverpool FC. The next part of our lesson is our main task. This gives you an opportunity to write down and show us everything that you've learnt during the lesson. You will need to pause the video at this point to complete the task, and you have two questions to answer. Question one is, explain one way that a named UK city is important nationally. And question two, is explain one way that a named UK city is important internationally. Both questions are worth three marks, and we will look for you to use connectives in your writing, such as this means that, which means that, and this leads to. Aim to pick out one importance nationally and explain how that makes Liverpool important and then pick out another reason that tells us about Liverpool's important internationally. Pause the video at this point, complete the task, and we will go through our mark scheme and expectations once you have restarted the video. Let's look at what you got. Remember that the ideas that are on the screen are not all of the different reasons that you could have chosen, you may have chosen slightly different ideas. What we really looking for here is the structure of your answer. I've chosen for my first answer to say, that Liverpool is important nationally, as areas such as the Cavern Club and the docks are important tourist destinations. Meaning that, there is increased employment for the area and meaning that the city can contribute to the UK economy. What's really important in that answer there is I've chosen a specific idea and that I've developed my idea to explain why that is an important thing for Liverpool. You can see that I've underlined phrases that say meaning that, and they are perfect ways to help us develop our ideas. In a three mark question, you should be aiming to use those sort of phrases, at least twice. For my second answer, I've written Liverpool is important internationally as it is home to key music venues such as the Cavern club and the Echo Arena. There's my specific. This means that Liverpool is known for its culture, leading to international tourists being attracted to the area and the culture being exported around the world. Again, I've got my two key phrases that are making sure that I am developing my ideas and fully explaining. You may have chosen different ideas, so check that in your answers, you've referred to a specific idea both nationally and internationally, and that you've done your very best to develop that twice.
