Video: Tin can drumming

﻿Hello everybody. My name's Christian and welcome to today's lesson. Today we are going to be learning how to make, how to play, a tin can drum kit. Very exciting. We are also going to do some listening exercises and you will need some resources, but I will tell you what you need later on, and you'll have chance to pause the video and go gather the things you need. So, when you're ready, let's begin. Okay, everybody welcome to the start of our lesson. Like I said before, today we're going to be looking at the drums and we're going to be making a tin can drum kit. And we're going to be learning how to play different parts on the drums and put them all together so we can create one piece music. Now, any parents or carers that are with you, you can support your young person or helping make the instrument and also supporting listening for changes in the music. Okay. Right, now we have a listening exercise and I've got a piece of music here that you need to tell me by giving me a nice big thumbs up when the drums start in our song. Okay, let's have a listen first. I hope you had a good listen. Let's listen one more time. I'm going to give you a thumbs up when I can hear the drums. Here we go. Let's listen again. It's the drums. Fantastic, I hope you managed to listen out for the drums and you gave me a good thumbs up when you could hear it. Okay, let's get ready for the next part of the lesson. Okay everyone, now it's time to make our instrument, but before we do, we need to gather some resources. Okay, so what you will need are, a pen, two large rubber bands, some scrap paper, a pair of scissors, some chopsticks or pencils, five tin cans and some Blu Tack. So when you've gathered your resources, you can resume the video and we'll be ready to make our instrument. Okay everybody, welcome to the let's make section of the lesson. So, you will have had chance to gather all your resources together. But let's have a look and see what we need. Okay, a pair of scissors. Now, please remember the scissors are very sharp and you'll need a parent or carer to help you use them. Some Sellotape, a pen, some pieces of scrap paper, some Blu Tack or White Tack it doesn't matter. I have Blu, two large rubber bands, a pair of chopsticks, or you could use pencils, and we're going to use these as beaters for our drum kit. And most importantly, five tin cans. You can have any size you like, I've got a small one here, but larger ones are just as good. Okay. The first thing we need to do after we've gathered our resources is prepare our tin cans. Now I've already prepared them, I'm going to talk you through what to do. So, your tin can, you're going to need to use a tin opener. Now your parent or carer is the person that needs to use the tin opener cause they're very sharp and can be dangerous. So make sure the or carer uses the tin opener. Once you've removed the lid and you've used your beans or spaghetti hoops whatever it is, you're going to need to clean your tin can and just soak the labels off. So we can put that in some nice warm water, leave it for about 15 or 20 minutes, and then you can just peel the label right off. And once you have the finished tin can, a nice safety tip, again you'll need your parent or carer to help you do this, cause it can be sharp. Just take the Sellotape and some scissors, cut some Sellotape and just stick it around the sharp edges of the tin can so it's not sharp anymore. And do that with all your tin cans. Then you'll be ready to go. So the tin can drum kit doesn't take much putting together. It's pretty much done. The most important thing we need to do is to tune it and make it sound slightly different. So let's first have a listen to what they sound like. So get your chopsticks ready or your pencils ready. Ah, they sound great. But if you want to tune them and make the pitch go higher or lower, firstly you'll need your Blu Tack and this we're going to use to lower the pitch. So take a small piece and just roll it into a ball. There we go, take one of your tin cans and just squash it down onto the tin can make a circle with it. Let's have a listen to what that sounds like. It's lowered the pitch, it's gone down. So you can do that on a few tin cans. This is all personal choice, just do it until you feel like they sound good for you. So I'm going to take another piece. Let's listen to this tin can first. Make another ball, and flatten it down, Let's see what that sounds like. Ah, fantastic. Ah, and if you want to raise the pitch make it higher, you can take the end of your chopstick or pencil and just make a very small dent in your tin can just press it down a little bit firmly but not too hard. And then, the more dents you make, it should start to raise the pitch. Sounds a little bit higher. So you can play around with that, to make them sound however you like. So now I'm just going to put these together like that, now we'll need our large rubber bands and I'm just going to put them over all of them and squash them together. Take the second one, just for a bit of extra stability. There we go. And there's our tin can drum kit. The best thing about this is you can carry it around with you. A nice portable musical instrument. So let's just have to final listen to what that sounds like and then for the next parts of the lesson, we'll be playing it. Ah, the final thing before we go, is you'll need your scrap paper and a pen, and you're just going to write the numbers One to five on a piece of paper. And with a little piece of Blu Tack, you're just going to stick these on like this, doesn't matter which is which, but as long as they all have a number one to five on your drums. One, two, three, four, and five. This is very important, because we'll need to know which number we're playing, when we play in the let's play section of the video, right. That's the let's make part done and I'll see you for the next bit. Okay, everyone. Welcome to the let's play section of our video. So, you should have your tin can drum kit ready, a pair of chopsticks or pencils. And we're going to learn how to play parts one and parts two. Okay, so let's have a look. Part one, you'll see there's some boxes. Let's count them. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. I've got eight boxes and each one has a number in it. In part one, the number is number one. So we are going to play number one just once in each box. So we'll play one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one. So eight ones. Let's have a go. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Ah, that's nice and easy that one. And you can play that two or even three times around, so you can have some practise with it. Nice and evenly spaced, don't rush. Like that okay. Part two. Oh, it gets a little bit trickier now because we've got two rows of boxes. Underneath, it's the same as the first part. So we're just going to eight number ones with our chopstick or pencil. But on top, the first box is empty, so we don't play anything. But then we're going to play the number two tin can at the same time as number one. And that pattern continues. So we don't play, play number two, we don't play, play number two and so on. All the while we're playing number one with the hand. So I'm going to use both hands for this. With one hand I'm just going to play the number ones, but the other hand, I'm going to play the number twos. Have a listen to see what it sounds like. There we are, fantastic. So that's part two. Now let's have a listen and see what part one and part two sound like put together. Here we go. Ah, fantastic. So there we have part one and part two. Now you'll have chance to pause the video and practise this at home and I'll see you for the next part. Okay, everyone. Now you've had a chance to practise part one and two. It's now time to have a look at the part three and four. Okay, so we've still got two rows of numbers, but this time it's slightly different. On the bottom, we still got that number one tin can we're going to use that quite a lot. On the top it's number twos, we're going to introduce tin can number three. But there's one thing that's quite different. In each box, there are two sets of numbers so we're going to play twice as fast because we're going to play two numbers in the space of one box. So, let's have a listen to what it sounds like, here we go. Ah, it's quite quick, quicker than part one and part two. Let's have a listen again. So we've got part, we've got number one and two together, and then one and three together. Here we go. Ah, fantastic. Right. It's time for part four. This time we're going to use every single tin can on our drum kit. So the first half of part four is very similar to part two that we've already played. But at the end we've got number three, four, and five. Have a listen to what it sounds like. Ah, that's really nice, I think we will listen to it one more time. Fantastic. So, that's part three and part four. I'm going to play them now, both put together and then you'll have chance to practise them at home. Here we go. Part three and four. Now you'll have chance to pause the video, have a practise at home and I'll see you for the final a part. Okay, everyone. Now you've had a chance to practise part one, part two, part three and part four. Now we're going to play them one after the other. Okay, so we can make one whole piece of music. All right I'm just going to go straight in because you've had a chance to practise all these. So have a listen and see if you can follow along at home. Now you can practise this at home, but feel free to play each part as many times as you like and come up with your own drum beat.
