Video: To identify animals that live in a woodland

﻿Hello everybody, Miss Hughes here, what's your name? Lovely to meet you all. Can you guess where I am today? I'm in the woods and I've come to find some animals. I think I might just have seen a squirrel scampering up the trees. And in this lesson, you're going to help me to identify animals that live in a woodland. There will be three lessons on woodland. The first with me, the second Miss. Sidenius and the third with Mrs. Garrard. In this lesson, we will listen to a story, learn about woodland and then learn about the smallest creatures that live in woodland called minibeasts. You're going to need your brain, which is ready to learn inside your head. You're going to need an explorer hat, I'm going to put mine on. And you're going to need some paper and a pencil. So get what you need and we start when you're ready. Fantastic. Have you got your explorer hat on, ready to find some Woodland animals? Great. Let's begin by listening to a story. And this story is set in a Woodland. It takes place in the woods. When you're listening to this story I want you to think about what signs of woods you can see. It's called "Tidy" by Emily Gravett and it's published by Macmillan. "Deep in the forest lived a badger called Pete who tidied and cleaned and kept everything neat. He tidied the flowers by checking each patch and snipping of any that didn't quite match. He tidied the fox by grooming his fur. He untangled each knot and each twig and each burr. He tidied the birds from the big to the small, by brushing their beaks and then bathing them all. He picked up stray sticks, he swept and he rubbed. He polished the rocks and scoured and scrubbed. So when a leaf fell, well, Pete tidied up. But still wasn't happy. Now the trees looked bare and scraffy. And so to make it look neat, he undertook a mighty feat. He dug up every single tree, but then it rained, there was a flood! And afterwards, a lot of mud. Pete called in the diggers, he called in the mixers, he called in the concrete, the rakers, the fixers. No mud, no leaves, no mess, no trees, perfectly tidy and perfectly neat. "The forest is practically perfect," said Pete. "I'm hungry," he thought, "I deserve a treat." So he hunted around for something to eat. But the beetles and worms that he usually found were under the concrete deep in the ground. And so Pete decided to go home instead. If he couldn't have dinner, he'd go straight to bed. But when he arrived and took out his key, there wasn't a door where the door used to be. later that night Pete tossed and he turned, his belly was empty, rumbled and churned. As he lay in his mixer wide, wide awake, he started to think, "I have made a mistake." So the very next morning, when it got light, he set about putting everything right. Then the animals came from the strong to the weak and they lent him a paw or a claw or a beak. They put everything back as it always had been, but maybe less ordered and not quite as clean and Pete, well he promised to tidy up less. But if he succeeded is anyone's guess, the end! Your turn? That was a story about an animal who lives in the Woodland called a Badger, my turn, Badger your turn. And Pete the badger wanted to tidy up the woodland, but in doing so he got rid of his shelter and his food. What did Pete use as his shelter in this story? Tell your screens. That's right. He had a home in the tree and lots of animals shelter under trees in the Woodland. What did Pete wants to eat? Can you remember? Pete wanted to eat the worms and the beetles that live underground. minibeasts and plants make great food for Woodland animals. So let's learn a little more about the Woodlands. The Woodlands are a habitat, my turn, habitat, your turn. A habitat is a home for animals, it's a home for animals. And different animals like living in different habitats. Here's some pictures of different habitats. Can you name any? Tell your screen. We all know this habitat, it's a woodland. And a polar habitat, the cold habitats. What about this one? It looks a bit like a Woodland has lots of trees, but the trees look a little different. It's a Rainforest. Remember Rainforests are very warm with lots of rain and there is the desert. There are lots of different habitats. And habitats have things that makes them a good habitat for different animals. They have different climates, different weathers. They have different places for animals to shelter, to stay safe and different foods for the animals to eat. And animals need to find a habitat with a climate, shelter and food that is good for them and helps them to survive. Helps them to live. The habitat we are looking at today is called a Woodland, my turn, Woodland, your turn. Woodland are covered in trees. Woodlands are covered in trees. Look at the picture. What can you see in the picture? Tell your screen. We can see lots of trees. And on the ground we can see lots of plants too. I notice that it's quite sunny in this picture. And Woodlands have mixed climates. They have some sun and some rain. Lots of animals like to live in a Woodland. Here are just some of them, but maybe you can name some different ones. Tell your screen, some animals that live in a Woodland. Well done you named loads. We've got squirrels, deer, mice, owls, foxes, and voles to name just a few. So let's think about the climate, the weather patterns in Woodlands? And we're going to think about the Woodlands in the UK. In the summer, Woodlands are quite warm with some rain. That means that lots of plants can grow. So animals have lots of shelter and food. Where might animals shelter in a Woodland? Tell your screen. They might shelter in? Great, well done. They might shelter under the trees, the leaves at the top protect the animals and stop them from getting too cold and wet. They might shelter under some logs where it is dark and damp. Or they might burrow underground. Think about these animals an owl and a mole. Where might these animal shelter? Tell your screen. These animals much shelter in? Well done. I can see you thought really carefully. The owls might shelter in holes in the trees or on branches, where they are up high and can look for food. The moles might burrow underground, where it is dark and damp. What about foods? What kind of food is available in the Woodland? Tell your screen. Well done. Some animals like owls will look for smaller animals to eat and there are lots of small animals in the Woodland like mice. There are also lots of plants and berries available for animals to eat and lots of seeds like acorns that animals might use for food. Think about what these animals might eat. We have a squirrel and an owl, tell your screen. A squirrel might eat? Or an owl might eat? Well done. We can see the squirrel is eating something that might be a nut or even an acorn. squirrels have plenty of food in the Woodlands. What's about the owl? Well, the owl is a predator, it eats smaller animals. And an owl has lots of choice in the Woodlands because there are small animals like mice for the owl to eat. But in the winter there's a bit of a problem. The leaves fall off the tree and it becomes very cold. The winter becomes cold. So animals in the Woodlands don't have the shelter or food they would normally have. That means they have to do something to survive the cold winters. And animals in the Woodland often hibernate, my turn, hibernate, your turn. Animals in the woods sometimes hibernate over winter. They go for a really long sleep at the end of autumn. And they wake up in the spring when the leaves are growing back. That means that they don't need to look for food or shelter over the winter because they are hiding somewhere safe. Now there are also smaller animals that live in the Woodlands called minibeasts. minibeasts are the tiny creatures that you might find if you look really carefully on the ground or under logs. What minibeasts can you think of? Tell your screen. They're are lots of minibeasts and here are just some. We have crickets, butterflies, centipedes, spiders, beetles, and bees. Some of these minibeasts are insects, minibeasts with six legs, and some are not insects, they are something else if they have more or less legs. Now it's your turn to go on a minibeast safari. And you're going to see what kinds of minibeasts you can find. With your grown up you can go for a walk and you can look for minibeasts and then you're going to draw them. I've drawn three minibeasts here and next to them I've written some information about them. My first minibeast is an ant so I've sorted it out a-n-t, ant. Then I've written the number of legs that it has, an ant has six legs, it is an insect. And then I've written the place where I found it, I found it under a l-o-g, log. Well done. My next minibeast was a spider, I've written that it has eight legs. And I found it in a w-e-b, web. And my last minibeast was a caterpillar with lots of legs that I found in grass. If you're new to writing, you can just write one sound in each box or just draw the pictures. I wonder what you're going to find. Remember when you're on your minibeast walk, you must be with a grown up and you must not touch anything without asking your grownup if it is safe to do so.
