Video: To learn about different fruits and vegetables

﻿Hello everyone. And welcome back to another lesson with me, Miss Sidenius. Today, we're going to be learning about one of my favourite things, fruits and vegetables. We're going to start today's lesson by thinking about lots of different fruits and vegetables. Then we're going to have a go at creating some really fun art with our fruit and vegetables. And finally, we're going to share that art with somebody in our household, a Teddy or toy, and we might even get to eat it. In this lesson you're going to need three things, a plate, some fruits and vegetables, and an adult to help you a bit later on. So for now, just get a plate and some fruits and vegetables. Pause the video here, make sure you've got those things and come back when you're ready. Good job for getting those things everyone. I wonder what different fruits and vegetables you've got in front of you. Can you recognise any of the fruits on this screen? Tell your screen, I had so many of you telling me what we've got here on this screen. So the green fruit is an avocado. The yellow fruit are yummy bananas. The orange fruit is an orange. And we've got some raspberries and tomatoes at the bottom. I wonder if you like any of these fruits, can you point to the fruits that you like to eat on the screen? Well done. The great thing about fruit is that there are so many different kinds. Can you think of any fruits that are not on the screen in front of us? Tell you a screen. So many of you had so many different ideas. I had apples, I had strawberries, I had mango, I had pineapple. And like I said, what's so good about fruit is that there are so many different types of fruit. So even if you don't like one of them, you should always carry on trying. And you might just find the right fruit that you love to eat. And it's really important that we eat lots of fruit because it's very, very good for us. It helps us to grow tall and strong. I wonder if you can tell me how fruit and vegetables are different. What makes something a fruit and what makes something a vegetable? Have a think. You can use a picture on the screen to help you. Tell your screen. Some of you were saying that fruits tastes sweet and juicy, whereas vegetables are not always very sweet. And you're right. That's true. But what makes something a fruit is if it has pips or seeds in the middle. So if you've ever eaten an orange, you might have had to pick out the seeds or the pips. And it's the same with an Apple. Apple has pips in the middle. So next time you're eating a fruit or vegetable. See if you can find a pip or a seed, if it has one, then it's a fruit, if it doesn't have one, then it's a vegetable, that's right. So let me see if I can put you to the test with some different fruits and vegetables. Hmm, is a carrot, a fruit or a vegetable. Does it have pips or seeds? No, it doesn't. So what is it? It's a vegetable, that's right? Because vegetables don't have any pips or seeds. What about a tomato? Is a tomato, a fruit or a vegetable. Tell your screen. Whoa, I managed to catch some of you out there. A tomato is a fruit. How do we know a tomato is a fruit? That's right, because it has pips and seeds inside it. So even though it tastes more like a vegetable, it's not very sweet. It's actually a fruit. That's a trick question for you. Well done, if you got that one right. Now, let's have a think about some yummy different vegetables that you can see on the screen. Can you tell me what some of them are? That's right, I can see broccoli. I can see peppers, I can see beetroot, cucumbers and carrots. And I bet you can think of many more vegetables that aren't on the screen. Can you think of any, tell your screen? Oh, I had celery, I had potatoes. I even had beans and peas as well. And they are all vegetables, well done. A vegetable is a plant food. Vegetables are usually not as sweet as fruit, like we said earlier, but they can also be quite sweet sometimes. Some peppers are quite sweet, aren't they? Vegetables are great because you can use them in so many meals when you're cooking and they taste really good if you dip them in yummy dips like hummus. Vegetables are also really important for making us healthy and strong. I wonder what some of your favourite vegetables are, tell your screen. Well done. I wonder if you've got some of those favourite fruits or vegetables in front of you. If you haven't, you can ask an adult to go and help you in the kitchen, because I would like you to get some different fruits and some different vegetables, maybe two or three fruits and two or three vegetables. Ask your adult before you go and take things because they might not want you to touch the fruit or vegetables. So pause the video here, go and get those fruits and vegetables with your adult and come back when you're ready. Great job, everyone. It's time for us to make some fruit and vegetable art. I'm going to make some funny faces with the fruits and vegetables that I found in my house. So you can see I'm using tomatoes for some eyes, a banana for a big smiley mouth. And what could that carrot before? I think I need another carrot as well to make some hair look. It's like some long hair. What am I missing? A nose, so I used carrots, tomatoes, a grape and a banana to make my funny vegetable, fruit and vegetable face. I used four different fruits and vegetables. I wonder if I can use even more fruits and vegetables. This time when I show you another funny face. So this time I'm going to try and use different fruits and vegetables. So I've got two grapes for my eyes and I've got some apple that's been cut up. If you would like some fruit or vegetable cut up for your art, you need to ask a parent or carer to help you. Cut up for you. I've got a big tomato nose. What else could I use? Oh, look, I'm changing it. So actually I'm going to use the tomatoes to make a smile at the bottom of my face. What am I missing? A nose, and I can use the pip for my nose. So I hope I've given you some fun ideas for making your vegetable, fruit and vegetable art. Pause the video here.
