﻿Hi, welcome to art lesson. My name is Mrs. Davies. This is Mark Making lesson two of four, objects that link to self. And today we're going to be looking at Van Gogh's bedroom. Okay so the first thing you're going to be doing is listening to the presentation. So, we'll get there. The next thing is we're going to look at the work in a bit more detail together. So analysing that together. Then you're going to be drawing your bedroom and finally recreating Van Gogh's use of line and colour in your drawing. Okay, the only time I feel alive is when I'm painting. I've picked that quote because I think it sums up Van Gogh's motivation for painting. The reason that he produced so much work and how much of himself he put into his paintings. So by looking at Van Gogh's paintings, we're going to learn an awful lot about the artist, and the world that he was living in at that time. Okay, so just to remind you of the fact file, he was born in 1853 in Holland. Died in 1890 in France at 37 years old. He worked as an art dealer and in the church, before he started painting. He started painting at 27 and painted 900 paintings in the next 10 years of his life, which if you remember, is a lot of painting. He was inspired by the impressionists. Remember that one because it may well come up in the quiz in him. He sold only one painting in his lifetime. He suffered mental illness, which ultimately resulted in him committing suicide. And if you remember, he cut off part of his ear after an argument with another artist called Gaugin. Okay so today, looking at the artist Vincent Van Gogh, you're going to listen to the presentation. Sit in, either sit in the doorway of your bedroom or take a photo of your bedroom and draw it. And finally, you're going to apply those techniques. So we have got quite a lot to get through today. You're going to be drawing your bedroom, using some of the skills that I'm going to go over with you in the lesson. The important thing is you create the best drawing that you can. So, I'm really not suggesting it's a race that it's a lesson activity that has to be finished by the end of the lesson. If it's not finished, it's fine. You can carry on with it in your creative time, or maybe you can do it in your next art lesson. And if you need to pause the video or watch it again, then please do. Remember if it didn't stick in your mind, it's time to rewind. Okay so, here is the painting. There are five versions of this painting. It's Van Gogh's bedroom at his brother Theo's house. So if you remember, he wasn't making any money from painting. So his brother was financially supporting him. Why did he paint it five times? Van Gogh painted quite a lot things several times. But my, I can only assume that if you paint something over and over again and you repeat painting it, is because you enjoy looking at it and you enjoy painting it. And maybe you have positive feelings about it. So I think he would have been very attached to his bedroom. I think he'd have been really appreciative, really grateful to his brother, that he has a nice place to live in. He painted everyday, people, places, and things so this is an everyday place for him, his bedroom. He painted the fields where people were working. He painted people like the postman and farm workers and a family sitting around a table. He wasn't interested in painting wealthy people or very valuable objects. And that's one of the reasons that his work is so powerful in, in Geo's, because it was really unusual at the time to be looking at ordinary people. So he produces a really interesting record of that time. So this was a very typical bedroom at the time, in France. And in fact it doesn't look that different from what a bedroom might look like now. So it's got a bed, it's got a chair, it's got a table, it's got a window. I just want us to have a little bit of a closer look. And it is a small digital image. So I'm sorry about this, 'cause it would be much more helpful if we could look at the real painting, but then again, can't have everything. Leaning close to the picture, and just have a look at the way that the artists, the way that Van Gogh has used line, first of all. So can you see that he's using what are called directional lines? So the lines in the floor for example, are closer together and smaller, and they gradually get further apart, further, further apart and larger as he gets close to the front of the painting. That creates something called perspective. So it looked like, like the perspective lines in the room. If you look at the bed stage, you can see that he's following the curve, that piece of wood at the top, with his lines, he used line expressively and you could see brushstrokes in his work. So that's one of the key features I'd like you to remember. I'd also like you to look at the use of colour. So he's using fairly bright colours. He's using yellows and blues and greens. It might have been a bright bedroom, but we do know that Van Gogh often changed slightly the colours, the real colours of the objects that he was looking at to create a more expressive painting. So it was all passive, his way of expressing himself. So that's another thing I'd like you to think about. When you're adding colour to your own bedroom drawings, you can change the colours if you want. If you fancy trying a new colour on the walls, I did in the example that I'm showing you, then this is your chance to do it. And finally, I just want you to notice the dark outlines around the objects. So can you see that he's got, dark lines, dark brown lines around the bed and the chairs? It looks like he's got some black outline in the window. That was a common feature of Van Gogh's work. It's actually inspired by the Japanese art, artworks that he looked at at the time. But that's something else that I'd like you to do, is really helpful because it helps to define the shapes. Okay, so, I'd like you to pause the video and complete the task, right? So this is the start of your bedroom drawing. So it may be at this point that you go and get yourself a chair and maybe something to rest on like a book or something so that you can draw in the doorway. It may be that you go upstairs or you go your bedroom and just take a photo in the doorway with your phone. Or if you can't do your bedroom, you could do a different room in the house. Or if you really can't do you can't draw any room in the house for whatever reason, then you can find a picture on the internet. You need a pencil to draw with, you need a rubber to rub out. It will be great, if you had some colours. I said pencil colours earlier, but if you've got oil pastels, brilliant If you have paints, then that would be excellent. So whatever you feel like using, that's fine. Or if you haven't got colours or paints or anything like that, you can just complete this task using a drawing pencils. Please don't be put off by the word colours there. 'Cause you could do a tonal drawing as well. Okay so if you can pause the video to get those things, and resume when you've finished. How did you get on? Hopefully you've got enough to get going with the task. Okay so we're drawing from direct observation. I hope you are. I did say that if you accidentally have no alternative, you could work from a Google image. The important thing about drawing from direct observation, is that you are drawing, from something that you have directly experienced and seen and observed. That's very, very important in the creative process. Just drawing from something that you've seen on Google, is not a genuine experience, it hasn't got as much. It's not as honest, really. And, isn't quite as interesting or compelling. So for example, when you think about Van Gogh's there's, we, it's lovely that we know for absolute certain, that everything we look at in those pictures, is something that the artist himself looked at. And that really is the point of art. If you want to produce work based on Google images, you might as well just print off the original image. But when you start, responding to the things in the world around you, that is a much more honest approach. So I just wanted to mention that, it's fine for the purposes of an exercise and for learning, but in reality, it's really nice if you can work from direct observation. Okay so this is something that I have directly observed. This is my daughter's bedroom. You've caught her on a good day. She actually tidied her room for this photo. You can see that she's got her window there, and, a bed and a chair and a table, a bit like Van Gogh's bedside table for doing her home learning. So you may well have a similar space in your bedroom. And that's what I worked from. So, I've got a little video here, don't panic. You don't need to remember everything 'cause I'm going to take you through it, one step at a time. If you can just watch it shows you, what the process was I followed. So I started off drawing that dot in the middle and then drew those lines. It's important to mention here that I have my paper portrait 'cause my daughter's got a long, thin room. If you've got a wider room, basically a larger room, then it may be more appropriate for you to have your paper, landscape. So choose whether which way round you have your paper. But you do exactly the same thing. Okay so the first thing you need to do is draw a dot in the centre of your paper and then connect that dot to the four corners of your piece of paper using diagonal lines. Those will be your lines of perspective. And the dots by the way is called the vanishing point. So things get smaller if they get closer to that dot. That's a pretty simple task I hope. So if you can pause the video and get that done, first of all please, and resume when you're finished. Okay, fingers crossed, you've got that done. The next thing you need to do is to draw the walls, the corners of your room, and the floor and ceiling. And I'm talking about the furthest wall away from you, so the back wall of your bedroom. So for, in my case, that was a wall that my daughter's window is on. So if you can draw the floor and ceiling, so those would be horizontal lines, and the corners of your room. Don't panic if you can't see the corners of your room, maybe you've got a wardrobe up in the corner or like, I, I had a desk or bed or whatever, draw them in for now because they are guidelines and then you can rub them out later. So I'm basically just, you can see, it's just a square. So if you can draw that square, for the back wall of your room. Pause the video to get that done. Okay, fingers crossed, you've got that done then. So, so far so straightforward. This is the slightly tricky bit. You just now starting to draw outlines. Don't feel you have to draw every single thing in your room. Draw the things that you're, the main things. Draw the things that you feel like adding in, but remember Van Gogh's sort of expressive way of working. So you don't, you certainly don't need to draw every single bit, clutter if you got, a slightly messy room, you don't need to draw the mess. You can tidy your room up in your artwork. Try to show perspective, so remember the objects get bigger as they get closer. So those, that bed has got that sort of diagonal line, following the lines of perspective. So if it was on the right hand side, they'd be diagonally going in from the right into the centre. If it was on the left hand side, they were going in from the left to the centre. Okay. Slightly trickier, good luck. Don't panic if it doesn't work out, absolutely perfectly. Give it a go. Remember you're learning. So it doesn't, it's expected for you to get things wrong and to make mistakes and, to not be looking at something absolutely perfect. Resume when you've finished. Okay, how did you get on? I suspect that that took you a bit longer. Don't panic. I'm going to show you a video now where I recreate the artist's style. So just to remind you, well, first of all, you're going to be starting with a base, a light base layer. So that could be a light colour like yellow or one of the paler colours, or it could be that you just press more lightly with your pencil, whatever colour you're using, or if its a tonal one, think about changing the colours. So this is where you get to redecorate your room. Don't forget to use those contour lines and follow the shape. Don't forget to add the dark outlines, so that something that you do tend to do towards the end, and think about layering colours. So not just using one colour. Okay, so this is me having a go demonstrating, doing this on my own drawing. So here I've got the lightest colour going down first. So I've got light yellow on the walls, light blue on the chair, and then I'm starting to add detail notice how I'm using more than one colour. So I'm using more much lighter green. So I had yellow on the walls and now I've added a blue. The walls by the way were magnolia, which is like a white. So I've definitely changed the colours, making the desk bright. And look at how the way I'm using contour lines on that chair, those curve lines that I'm using contour lines, on the walls as well. So there's straight lines because it is, a flat smooth walls. And I'm trying to use contour lines on the bedding there to make it look more like soft kind of fabric. Notice I'm leaving some areas, with no lines on at all. So don't be afraid to use the paper. And finally I'm adding in those dark outlines to define the shapes. Okay, there we go. That was my version of Van Gogh's bedroom. There's a reminder of what the original looked like. There's a reminder of the things that you need to remember when you're adding colour. Good luck. Pause the videos to complete that.
