Infection and response

UNIT

This lesson we will look at infectious disease. We will learn how disease is spread and how we can prevent the spread from person to person. We will also look at how pathogens make us ill when they get inside our bodies, and what mechanisms our bodies have to defend us against pathogens.

Infectious disease

This lesson looks at the symptoms, prevention of spread and treatments of the viral diseases, measles, TMV and HIV. As well as the bacterial diseases such as salmonella and gonorrhoea.

Viral and bacterial disease

In this lesson we will look at the fungal infection rose black spot and the protist infection malaria.

Fungal and protist disease

This lesson focuses on how the body responds to a pathogen. We will also look at what it  means to be immune to a particular disease.

Immunity

In this lesson you will learn what a vaccine is made up of, how they work to prevent infection and how they were discovered.

Vaccines

This lesson will cover the differences between painkillers and antibiotics. How antibiotics work and look at data on different antibiotics.

In this lesson we will develop your maths in science skills.

Maths skills

This lesson looks at the stages of drug development.

Testing drugs (Part 1)

This lesson focuses on double blind trials, explaining what they are and why they are important.

Testing drugs (Part 2)

This lesson looks at how monoclonal antibodies are produced, how we can use them and also their advantages and disadvantages.

Monoclonal antibodies

In this lesson we look at what defences plants have to protect them from pathogens. We will also look at how plants use ions.

Plant diseases and deficiencies (Part 1)

During the lesson we will learn the symptoms of mineral ion deficiencies. We will also look at plant diseases and how we can diagnose these diseases.

Plant diseases and deficiencies (Part 2)

In this lesson we will go back over infectious diseases such as viral, bacterial, fungal and protist diseases. We will also look at accurate scientific language and how we can make some revision cards. This lesson can be watched at the end of the topic or after the fungal and protist disease lesson.

Review (Part 1)

In this lesson we will revise immunity, vaccines, antibiotics and testing drugs. We will make sure we can use accurate scientific language and construct our own revision cards.

Review (Part 2)

During this lesson we will look at monoclonal antibodies and plant disease. We will construct some revision cards and practice using accurate scientific language.

Review (BIO ONLY)

In this lesson we will look at how to answer exam questions based on the command verb.
