﻿Hello, welcome to your art lesson. My name's Mrs. Davies and this is lesson on abstract art, lesson four of eight. Today we're going to looking at Matisse and this is your second Matisse lesson today. You're going to be producing a view from your own window. Okay, so we're going to be looking at Matisse again, reviewing some of the facts about his life. I'd like you to listen to the presentation, review the artist's style, draw a view, and recreate your own Matisse-inspired drawing. So just a reminder, Matisse was born in 1869, died in 1954. He was French, studied law originally, and was one of the Fauves, otherwise known as wild beasts. He was married with two children and recognised along with Picasso as being one of the main protagonists in the European Avant Garde. "He who loves, flies, runs and rejoices; "he is free and nothing holds him back." These are the words of Henri Matisse and it gives us an insight into the idea, his motivation behind producing the works that he did, and working in the way that he did. If you remember me talking about the fact that a lot of these artists had experienced the horror of war and that the wars encouraged people, particularly the younger generation to start questioning the decisions made by people in positions of power. And ultimately it led them to question everything. So at this point in history, huge changes were being made in the art world and the changes that they made and the way that they reshaped what we consider as art has reverberated through history. So we still use colour in the way that the Fauves used colour. We still use some of their stylistic approaches, things like impressionism and mark making. Well, this group of artists were the forerunners. These were the people who changed everything. Okay, so today looking at the artist, Henri Matisse, I'd like you to listen, try and remember the key points about him. I'd like you to follow the instructions and complete the tasks. And finally, I'd like you to create using the features of Matisse's work to inspire your own work. Okay, so here we've got a view of the inside of a room, and I'd just like to draw your attention to some of the, so this was painted by Henri Matisse, and I'd like to draw your attention to some of the key features. So first of all, that bright, unrealistic colour. So the entire room is very flat and painted in red and shades of red, oranges and reds and yellows. So he's flattening the perspective and that was a feature of his work. So he, if you look at, for example, the clock at the back of the room, there is no tone on it at all. No light and shadow, it is just flat. And the perspective as well has been flattened. If you look at those yellow outlines, that's actually the undercoat showing through. So he uses that yellow of the undercoat as a way of outlining shapes. It's decorative, you can see that he has emphasised things like patterns and using some of the leaves in the plant for example, he's creating his own pattern and he has highlighted the artworks in the room as well. And if you look at it, he's influenced by the artwork of other artists. So he was a bit of an art collector and he had sculptures and artworks in his room that I think we can see here. So for example, I think maybe the plate on the table is a Picasso. I think the, perhaps the figures on the painting in the far right hand corner are by an artist called Gauguin. And I think the little statues on plinths underneath that figure painting might be by the artist Rodin. He certainly had in his possession artworks by all of those artists. Okay, and here's another one of his paintings. So you can see colour has been used slightly differently here. You can see the colours are paler. He often features the interior so although we are looking at a view from a window, we have got the window in the picture as well. And we've got some of the inside of the room. That would have made life a little bit easier for a landscape painter. If they've got, if they're able to see these beautiful views from their own house. I wonder what the views are like from your window. Certainly they're not quite as beautiful as that in my house. I would love to have that kind of a view from my window. Okay, so today you're going to be producing your own Matisse-inspired view. And the first thing I'd like you to do is pause to complete the task of collecting six coloured pencils or more if you've got them, a pencil, paper, and a rubber, and if you can press play when you've got those things, please. Okay, so hopefully you've got all of those things. Thank you very much. Okay. And now I'm just going to show you a video of what I'm going to be asking you to do today. So this video takes you from the start of drawing out the outlines all the way through to working on the colour and I'll talk through it while I'm playing it. Okay, so I'm sorry to say that the lines are quite light to begin with. So it's quite hard to see them. You can see I'm showing perspective here, so you can see the windows are getting smaller as they are further away from you. And here I'm putting down a light base colour. That's something that I'd like you to do in your own drawings. And then over the top of that, I'm adding, drawing the colours and the colours that I'm using are not realistic. My tree isn't red, it's actually conventional tree colours and the vine hanging from the pergola there is not red either. The doors aren't red. So I'm using colours expressively. It was quite a hot day. So I use those reds, oranges and yellows. I like blue, so I use blue for the table. Okay, so that gives you an idea of what you're going to be doing. So the first thing I'd like you to do with your piece of paper is to put a dot in the middle of your piece of paper. Now that is the vanishing point. Kind of indicates where the horizon line is. So things are going to get smaller as they get closer to that point. And I'd like you to draw a line from each corner of the paper, into that dot in the middle. So you'll end up with a piece of paper that looks like the one in front of you now. So look at that picture. I'd like you to pause the video and complete that first, please. Okay, that was a fairly straightforward activity. That's the first bit done. The next thing I'd like you to do is draw the opening to either the door or the window frame. So there I've drawn all four corners of the, all four of the edges of a window. I actually drew through a door. So the bottom edge wasn't there. At this point, also, I ought to say, you can either have your picture portrait or landscape, use your common sense. If you've got a tall, thin window, then you're going to want your paper to be portrait. If you've got a wide window or a doorway, you might want to have your picture landscape. You make the choice about which way round your paper goes. If you could pause the video and complete that task please and resume when you're finished. Okay, again, that should have been a fairly quick and straightforward activity. Now it starts getting a little bit trickier, but hang in there 'cause these are really important skills. So you can see now, I've got the windows opening out in this picture. If your windows open in, or if they slide, they slide up, then you're fine. You don't need to show the perspective at all. If they're in, then you just do them on the inside edge of the square that you've drawn for your window frame. And you can see there that the windows are getting smaller because they're getting further away. If they open inwards, they would get bigger as they got closer to you. If you could draw those windows into your picture, whatever your windows look like. So they might not be like that. You may have a panel in the middle, it doesn't open, in which case, just put it in, just put the frame in. Okay so if you can pause the video to complete that task, please. Okay, and fingers crossed that went all fairly smoothly. The next thing you need to do is to draw in the detail, draw what you can see, but try and avoid having too much detail. Remember what we just looked at in Matisse's work. It wasn't full of loads and loads of detail. It was all fairly simple shapes, fairly simple outlines, just getting a sense of what the room was like. He focused on decorative areas and patterns. So if you've got any of those or if you can make some, so remember I used the leaves, I've got loads more leaves than that but I used some of the leaves that were on that trellis thing in my garden to try and create a bit of a pattern. Okay, so if you can pause the video and complete that, please. How did you get on? I'm hoping that you've got an outline that you like. Remember it is tricky, so please don't get downhearted just because you're finding it difficult. The whole point of art is that you're challenged. And if you're not finding it challenging, you're probably not learning an awful lot. So it would be really nice if you found it challenging, but you persevered with it. Think about your maths lessons or any other lessons in school. If it's difficult, you don't give up. If you get an answer wrong, you don't get it, don't give up. And I'm sure your teachers have said this to you before, but if you're making mistakes, that's proof that you're learning. So don't get downhearted, but stick with it. Let's have a look at next thing that you need to do. So the first thing, if you remember that I did was to add that light colour over the whole drawing. And remember, because you're looking at Matisse and the fact that he was a Fauve, the colours don't need to be realistic. So you use colours as you want to use them, be expressive with your colour, think about the atmosphere that you want to create in your work. It might be an atmosphere based on how you're feeling, or it might be an atmosphere based on the kind of day that it is or the environment that you're looking at, or it might be based on something else that's inspiring that's external, maybe music or something else that you're thinking of. Leave gaps for the light colours. So you can see around those window frames, I've used red, but I've left lines of yellow in there to create outlines so, and that's what Matisse did, obviously.
