﻿Hello, everybody, it is Mrs. Hardisty here with your English lesson for today. Today's lesson is a grammar lesson where we're going to be thinking all about different sorts of words. So, when you're ready, let's begin. This is what we're going to do in today's lesson. We're going to start by thinking about word classes, different sorts of words and their definitions, so what they mean. And then we're going to have a go at identifying different sorts of words, different word classes, and then you're going to practise writing using this knowledge, your understanding of word classes. For this lesson, you will need some paper and pencil, and ideally some crayons or pens for you to be able to do four different colours. You don't need those crayons and pens, if you've only got paper and pencil, that's fine, but if you do have some different colours, it'd be brilliant if you can grab them. So you might want to pause your video and make sure you've got those things to hand, and then we can start our lesson. Now, if you haven't looked at lesson one from this unit, I suggest that you go and watch that. And even if you don't do all of the different activities, to definitely watch the bit where I read the story, because that's going to be really helpful for one of your activities later on in this lesson. So if you haven't done lesson one from this unit, The Fate of Fausto, please go back and make sure that you've done that before you then carry on. So we're going to begin with our word class definitions. My turn, your turn. Nouns, nouns. A noun is a PPT, a person, place or thing, your turn. A noun is a PPT, a person, place or thing. So here are some examples of nouns, people, places, or things, we might find in our story, The Fate of Fausto. Tree, man, sheep, boat and sea, these are all examples of nouns. Adjectives. An adjective describes a word, it tells you what it's like. Your turn, an adjective describes a word, it tells you what it's like. So here are some adjectives that describe things from The Fate of Fausto. So tall, angry, calm, peaceful, pink. So you might have the tall mountain, angry man, calm sea, beautiful pink flower. They will describe the word, they often describe a noun. Let's just check which of these is an adjective? Is it one, a flower, or two pink, which is the describing word, the adjective? One or two, shout it out, show me with your fingers. It's pink. Okay, what about this? Which of these are two, so two adjectives now. Is it flower, delicate, angry, or man? Which two are the adjectives, the describing words? Shout them out, show me with your fingers which point to them, which ones are they? So delicate and angry are both adjectives, they describe what something is like. Now, which of these is the odd one out? Which one is one type of word class, and then all the others belong to another word class? Flower, mountain, tree, and small. Which one is the odd one out? Can you shout it out? It's small, and why is that? Because small is an adjective and all the others are nouns. People, places or things. My turn, your turn. Verbs. A verb is a doing word. If you do it, then the word is a verb, your turn. A verb is a doing word. If you do it, then the word is a verb. So let's look at some examples of verbs, doing words. Shouted, so the man shouted, plucked, pluck the flower, sighed, bowed, can you show me bowed? Bowed, ignored, if you ignore someone, you don't do what they say or you don't listen to them, ignored. And then finally, adverbs, adverbs. So the definition is an adverb describes a verb, it often ends in ly, your turn. An adverb describes a verb, it often ends in ly. Okay, let's look at some examples of these adverbs. Angrily, so the man shouted angrily. Easily, you walked easily across the field, sadly, quickly, can you show me quickly? Can you run on the spot quickly? Furiously, can you shake your fist furiously? Furiously, since you're so angry, furiously, and can you see that all of these examples end in ly, you sometimes get an adverb that doesn't end in ly, but they often end in the letters ly. So now let's check which of these is the adverb? Is it slowly or jumped, so one or two? Shout out which one is it, slowly or jumped, which one describes the verb? It's slowly, and did you spot it ends in the letters ly? Which of these are the two verbs? The two verbs. Carefully, walked, bowed or angrily, which ones are the verbs, the doing words? Can you shout them out to me? I can't hear you. I think the two verbs are walked and bowed. Okay, now the odd one out. So which of these is the odd one out? We've got one word that is a particular word class, and then all the others are a different word class. Gently, stamped, shook, leapt, which of these is the odd one out? Can you shout that out to me? Can you point to it? Which one is it? It's gently, because gently is an example of what? An adverb, ends in ly, and all the others are an example of a verb, a doing word. So this is a really fun activity called link three. So I've got lots of different words that I'm going to read out to you, and as I'm doing that, I'd like you to think of three words that you could link together, because they are a similar word class. So I've got easily, angrily, tree, jumped. Man, quickly, walked, lake, and then ordered. So could you now pause the video and link three of these? You might want to point to three that you think you could link, then you might be able to find another three words that you can link together. You can write down your answers as well, write down three words that you would link together. So pause the video now, and link three. Did you find three nouns or three adverbs? Let's look. So man, lake and tree are all examples of nouns, PPT, person, place, or thing. And then easily, angrily and quickly, are all examples of adverbs. So they end in ly, they describe how you do something. And then that means that walked, jumped and ordered are all examples of verbs, those doing words. So now I'd like you to try and spot the word class in these sentences. So here's my sentence. The man angrily stamped his foot. Which word in that sentence is the noun, which word is the verb, the doing word, and which word is the adverb that describes how he did it? Can you pause the video and then write out that sentence, and this is where I'd like you to use your colouring pens or crayons if you've got them, and then underline the noun in one colour, the verb in another, and the adverb in another. So pause the video now, write out that sentence, and then underline the different word classes. Let's see what you put. Is it the same as me? So the man, the man is the noun, that's the person, place or thing, and that he also stamped his foot, so the foot is a thing as well. Now, in a sentence like this, you might have a few different nouns. The man is what's called the subject of the sentence, so that's what the sentence is all about, it's about the man, but we've got two nouns here. And then our verb is stamped, that's what he did, and how did he do it? He did it angrily, so that's our adverb. Okay, here's a next sentence for you to practise doing this. So we've got the huge mountain listened calmly. So again, in a moment, I'd like you to pause the video, write out that sentence, and then underline in four different colours, the noun, the adjective, the verb, and the adverb. If you don't have any colours, you can just label them, so you can underline it and then label it now, or label an adjective. So can you now pause your video, write the sentence, and identify the noun, adjective, verb, and adverb. Fantastic work, let's do the answers. So the noun was mountain, that's the thing, and then the adjective, remember describe something, so the adjective is huge, the huge mountain. And then our doing word was listened, which means that our adverb is calmly, listened calmly. And now it's your turn to write. So I've got three sentences here. And what I would like you to do is add in some adjectives, some adverbs and some verbs. So I'm going to read out each one and every time I pause, I'd like you to think what word could you use to go in there? So the man impatiently to the sea. So it could be the lovely man, sign impatiently need to sea, but I don't think those words would match with the, so can you think which adjective could use to describe man, and then which verb does he do? And then my second sentence is the sea listened to him. So now you've got to think of two adjectives to describe the sea, and then how that it listened to him. And then finally, he began to sink as he stepped out of the. So he began to sink as he stepped, how did he step? Out of the, so an adjective, and then a noun. So can you now pause your video and complete those sentences. Great work, everyone. This is what I put. You might have chosen similar words, you might have chosen different words. So I chose the foolish man shouted impatiently to the sea. The deep, blue sea listened quietly to him. And he began to sink as he stepped carefully out of the small boat. The only one that you really should have had the same was the noun boat, at the end, all the rest, you could have chosen different things. So let's just recap what we have done today. We have looked at word class definitions for different word classes, nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs. We've practised identifying them, and then we've used them in some writing. Brilliant work, you've done so well, and we can use all the best to make our writing even better when we come to write our own versions of the story. I'll see you soon, bye bye.
